Leadership, at any level, is filled with messiness. One of the leading questions I have to continually ask myself is:
How do I find the “miracle” in the midst of messiness?

One of the greatest values of a great leader is their ability to lead with confidence and calmness in the midst of everyday messiness, or an unforeseen crisis. Grasping that “crisis is always current” and how we lead through that crisis will determine if your clients, and customers, will stick with you or leave.
The Multitude of Messiness:
1. Everyday messiness – In all of our organization’s messiness shows up, as soon as we begin the day. All it takes is one person to walk through the door with a visible backpack of burden to throw off the whole vibe. While they might be committed to “keeping it to their selves”, the reality is everyone can see it! This is why the leadership team needs to walk in every day filled with joy, hope, encouragement, & consistency. Without our ability to set the pace, messiness multiplies killing momentum.
2. Catastrophic messiness – It was a normal afternoon at work when a huge storm started heading our way. Within a couple of hours, the storm had destroyed one of the communities where our members lived. In a matter of minutes, we changed our cadence from normal work to rallying and serving the community next to us. I was allowed to be one of the first ones into the destroyed areas, to maneuver through we had to wait for bodies to be removed, etc. In 24 hours we had 8,000 volunteers come and help.
The challenge for leadership was being present in the moment while thinking 2 months ahead when all the news trucks left, & people expected normalcy from us. Leading parallel is one of the greatest aspects of a phenom leader!
Blog Questions:
God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us. Ephesians 3:20
One of the reasons God will allow seasons of messiness is to allow His spirit to work within us to try to captivate our heart, soul, mind, and body. Revealing to us, when we take the time, what the miracle is that God is doing in the midst of the messiness.
1. Where is a quiet place you can pull away to, and be refreshed?
2. What is the personal messiness you need to surrender to deal with before you even begin to process the “Bigger” messiness that all of us are going through today in the world?
3. What are 3 great things/miracles – that you can write down today that show God doing great things in your life, although there is still messiness all around?
Messiness is a promise. Miracles are earned by surrender. A messy leader will destroy their organization. What is the messiness you need to deal with, with grace but firmness, today?
